Planting Instructions
Hole Preparation & Depth: Dig a hole twice the width of the plant's root ball. Line the hole using a mixture of 50% organic amendment (such as Leafgro® or compost) and 50% existing soil. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits 2 to 3 inches higher than the original soil grade.
Root Ball Care: For potted plants, remove the container and gently loosen the outer roots. For B&B (balled and burlapped) plants, remove all ropes and untie the burlap from around the trunk, tucking the excess fabric down into the hole. Do not remove the bottom burlap completely, as it keeps the root ball safely intact.
Backfilling & Aftercare: Fill the hole to the top of the root ball with your soil mix, firming it gently to eliminate air pockets. Soak the area thoroughly with water, then apply a 1-3" layer of mulch. Moving forward, check the soil under the mulch regularly; water 3 to 4 times per week, and up to once a day during dry summer heat.
Watering Instructions
Most new plantings should be watered 3 to 4 times a week, increasing to once a day during extremely dry summer months. For best results, place a hose at the base of the plant at 30-50% strength, ensuring water doesn't run off faster than the ground can absorb it.
We recommend soaking small plants for 15 minutes (targeting a depth of 6–10”) and large plants or trees for 30 minutes (targeting a depth of 12–16”). While sprinklers can work, drip irrigation or soaker hoses are far more effective for trees and shrubs.
For optimal plant health, water in the early morning (5 A.M. to 9 A.M.) or early evening (4 P.M. to sunset) so foliage dries before cooler night temperatures arrive. Avoid watering in the direct heat of the day—but if a plant is actively wilting, water it immediately!
